Boiler Making Banging Noise? Causes (and When to Call)

Boilers should not keep you awake at night. If yours has started making banging, clanking or kettle-like noises, it is a sign that something is not quite right inside the system. Some causes are easy to sort, while others need urgent attention from a Gas Safe engineer.
First steps when your boiler starts banging
Before you panic, try to notice exactly when the noise happens and what it sounds like. This information will really help a heating engineer diagnose the problem quickly.
Ask yourself a few quick questions while the boiler is running:
Does the banging happen when the heating is on, the hot water is running, or both?
Is it more of a loud bang, a rumbling kettle noise, or a ticking / knocking sound in the pipes?
Does it happen all the time, or only when the boiler first fires up or shuts down?

Common causes of banging boiler noises
Most banging or knocking sounds come down to a handful of common issues: kettling, trapped air, pump problems, expanding pipework or sludge in the system. Understanding these can help you describe the problem and avoid making it worse.
Kettling: when your boiler sounds like a kettle
Kettling is when your boiler starts to sound like a boiling kettle, often with rumbling, whistling or popping noises. It usually means the water inside the heat exchanger is getting too hot, creating steam bubbles that collapse with a bang.
In hard water areas, limescale builds up inside the boiler, especially on the heat exchanger. This scale coats the metal and creates hot spots, so water boils in small patches instead of heating evenly. The boiling causes the noisy bubbling and banging you hear.
Sludge from rust and dirt can have a similar effect by restricting water flow. When water cannot move freely, it lingers in the boiler and overheats, which can trigger kettling. Over time, this stresses the boiler components and can shorten its life.
Air trapped in the heating system
Air pockets inside your radiators or pipework can also cause knocking or gurgling sounds. Instead of flowing smoothly, water hits these pockets and makes noise as it forces its way past.
Trapped air is especially common after work has been carried out on the system, or if there has been a leak and the water level dropped. Radiators may feel hot at the bottom and cool at the top if there is air inside.
Bleeding radiators is often enough to clear minor air problems, but if the noise keeps returning, there may be an underlying issue that needs checking.
Pump issues and restricted water flow
Your boiler’s pump keeps hot water circulating the radiators and pipework. If it is set too high, water can rush through the pipes and cause banging or rattling noises. If it is failing or partially blocked, the reduced flow can lead to overheating and kettling.
A struggling pump may also cause some radiators to stay cold, or you might hear a humming or grinding noise from the boiler itself. Pump settings and replacement should always be handled by a qualified engineer.
Expanding and contracting pipework
Not all banging is from inside the boiler. Sometimes the noise comes from pipes expanding and contracting as they heat up and cool down. If pipework is clipped too tightly or is rubbing against joists or floorboards, you might hear tapping, creaking or knocking.
These noises can be annoying but are not usually dangerous. A heating engineer or plumber can often adjust clips or add insulation to quieten the pipework.
Sludge build-up is restricting flow
Over the years, rust, dirt and other debris settle in radiators and pipes, forming a thick sludge. This sludge restricts water flow, making it harder for your boiler to move hot water around the system.
When water flow is restricted, the boiler has to work harder, and parts of the system can overheat, leading to banging, kettling and uneven heating. You might also notice radiators that are hot at the top but cold and sludgy at the bottom.
A professional system clean or power flush can remove sludge, improve efficiency and reduce noise. It is not something to attempt yourself, as the pressure and chemicals involved need expert handling.
Safe checks you can do yourself
There are a few basic checks most homeowners can carry out safely. Never remove boiler covers or tamper with internal parts. If you are in any doubt, switch the boiler off and call an engineer.
Checking the boiler pressure gauge
Most domestic boilers work best with the pressure between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. You will usually find a small pressure gauge on the front of the boiler or nearby pipework.
If the pressure is very low, parts of the system may fill with air, which can cause noise and poor heating. Very high pressure can also make the system noisy and put stress on components. Do not repeatedly top up a system that keeps losing pressure, as this points to a leak or fault that needs professional attention.
Bleeding radiators to remove trapped air
Bleeding radiators can often help with gurgling or knocking caused by air. You will need a radiator key, an old towel and a small container.
Turn the heating off and let the system cool. Starting with the radiator furthest from the boiler, use the key on the bleed valve at the top corner and turn it gently until you hear air hissing out. Once water starts to drip steadily, close the valve again.
Work your way around the house, then check the boiler pressure again. You may need to top up slightly, following the manufacturer’s instructions. If you are not comfortable doing this, book a heating engineer instead.
Noting when the banging happens
It is really helpful to notice whether the noise happens when you use hot water, when the central heating is on, or both. This can give clues about whether the problem sits more with the boiler itself or the wider heating system.
If the noise happens only with hot taps or showers, it may point to an issue in the boiler’s hot water side.
If it is only with heating, sludge, air or pump settings in the radiators and pipework may be involved.
If it happens with both, kettling or a circulation problem inside the boiler is more likely.

Serious warning signs: switch off and call for help
Certain symptoms mean you should not use the boiler until it has been checked by a Gas Safe engineer. These can point to dangerous faults that need urgent attention.
Call a professional immediately if you notice any of the following:
Smell of gas anywhere in the property
Burning, metallic or electrical smells from the boiler
Visible leaks, dripping water or signs of corrosion on the boiler or nearby pipework
Boiler cutting out repeatedly or showing fault codes every time it tries to fire
Soot, scorching or discolouration around the flue or boiler casing
In these cases, turn the boiler off at the controls and, if you smell gas, follow emergency gas safety advice for your area straight away.
Preventing boiler banging in future
Once the immediate noise problem is sorted, it is worth taking steps to protect your boiler and heating system from future issues. A little preventative care can extend the life of your boiler and keep energy bills down.
Regular boiler servicing
An annual service by a Gas Safe engineer lets small problems be picked up before they turn into noisy breakdowns. The engineer will check safety devices, clean key components and make sure the boiler is burning correctly.
Servicing helps reduce kettling by spotting early signs of limescale and overheating. It also gives you a chance to ask about any noises, pressure drops or radiator issues you have noticed.
Using an inhibitor and considering a magnetic filter
Corrosion inside radiators creates sludge that can lead to banging, cold spots and blocked pipes. A central heating inhibitor is a chemical added to the system water that slows this corrosion down.
A magnetic filter fitted on the return pipe to the boiler can capture metal particles before they reach the boiler and pump. Over time, this helps keep the system cleaner, reduces the risk of kettling and makes power flushing less frequently needed.
System cleaning and power flushing
If your system is already sludged up, a professional clean or power flush can remove the build-up and restore proper water flow. This can make a big difference to noise levels and heating performance.
A power flush uses specialised equipment and chemicals to push sludge out of radiators and pipework. It should only be carried out by trained engineers, as the process needs careful control to protect your boiler and system.
